18-year-old driver charged after car hits children, killing one

An 18-year-old driver will be charged for his role in the death of a 2-year-old and the injury of another child.

According to the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office, a family was walking on Mena Drive in the Gray's Creek area in Cumberland County, right off N.C. Highway 87. The parents were pulling their children, ages 2 and 4, in a toy car.

Lewis Abinijah Lavon swerved into the family, hitting the toy car and injuring both children. He and both children were taken to an area hospital. The 2-year old, identified as Cecilia Ballester Martinez, died from her injuries. Her brother is in the hospital with critical injuries.

Neither the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office nor the State Highway Patrol said what charges Lewis will face.
