DURHAM, N.C. — A woman found dead in a pool of blood in a Durham apartment early Wednesday had had her tires slashed in the two preceding nights, her mother told a 911 dispatcher.

Crystal Gigliotti's mother found the 21-year-old in Apartment E6 in the Stonewood Apartment Homes complex, at 4524 Newby Drive, at about 2:30 a.m.

The cause of death hasn't been determined, and police said they were waiting for the preliminary results of an autopsy. A spokeswoman said investigators were treating the case as a homicide.

Gigliotti's mother said her husband had received a "weird call" from their daughter's former boyfriend, so she went to check the apartment and found Gigliotti unresponsive and covered in blood, according to a 911 call released Wednesday afternoon.

"He said something about slashed, and we thought it might have been her tires again," she told the dispatcher.

The woman said she thought Gigliotti's young son might have been inside the apartment, but she was afraid to search for him.

Police never mentioned a child in discussing the case.

Neighbors said at least 15 police officers were at the complex early Wednesday, and the area remained cordoned off until late Wednesday afternoon as investigators collected evidence from the apartment and a blue Ford SUV in the complex parking lot.

Police said they have been called to Apartment E6 three times in the last year, including reports of a disturbance on March 13 and April 18.
