FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — The Easter bunny came early to some neighborhoods in Fayetteville. City leaders, determined to make sure that last weekend's storms did not leave children without the anticipated gifts and candy, gathered donations and handed out hundreds of baskets Saturday.

Fayetteville police said they got the idea from a similar group in Lee County. Project Easter Basket delivered candy and toys to hundreds of children in and around Sanford. The Big Lots, at 3000 S. Horner Blvd., was devastated by Saturday's tornado, but managers there donated baskets, candy, toys and gifts to the effort.
