ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — A 27-year-old Rocky Mount man has been charged in the death of Duwone Vondel Parker, 32, whose body was found Wednesday morning in a wooded area at the west edge of town.

Matthew Keith Hutcheson is charged with first-degree murder. He was being held without bond at the Nash County jail on Thursday.

No other details of the case, such as a possible motive or what evidence linked Hutcheson to the crime, were released.

Police said a man walking his dog found Parker's body in a wooded area near the 3700 block of Greystone Drive around 7:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Parker's mother had reported him missing, authorities said. He was last seen by family members on Feb. 25.

The Medical Examiner's Office in Greenville is performing an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

Residents who live near the site said that the body had been burned, and there was a large burned spot in the woods that smelled strongly of gasoline. Police said they couldn't comment on those reports.

Police said it wasn't clear yet if Parker was killed there or if he had been killed elsewhere and his body dumped there.
