WADE, N.C. — Cumberland County sheriff’s detectives have charged David Richard Aekins, 26, with murder in a double shooting early Wednesday that left one man dead and another injured.

Aekins, of 7413 Oak Ave., faces one count of first-degree murder and one count of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury with intent to kill.

Investigators say he got in an argument at his home with Gary Dale Burnett, 26, whose address is unknown, and Burnett’s brother Raushawn Poe, 22, of Third Street, at about 1 a.m. Wednesday.

When detectives arrived on the scene, they found Burnett shot to death. Emergency crews took Poe to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center where he underwent surgery to treat his gunshot wound. His condition was not known.

Aekins, Burnett and Poe allegedly became involved in some type of disturbance, and detectives said they were still gathering information.

Aekins was being held in the Cumberland County Detention Center without bond on the first-degree murder charge and a $250,000 bond for the assault with a deadly weapon charge.

He will make a first court appearance at 2:30 p.m. Thursday in the Detention Center Courtroom.
