SANFORD, N.C. — Two men were shot while about 250 people partied in a rented building at the Lee County fairgrounds in Sanford early Sunday, police said.

Tauren Tyrell Gunter, 19, is accused of shooting Errick Leonard Washington and Franklin Deon Dorsett inside a fairgrounds building at 505 N. Seventh St. around 2:20 a.m., said Capt. David Smith. Washington was shot in the neck and thigh, and Dorsett was shot in the groin.

Both men were transported to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill. Smith said Washington was in critical but stable condition. Hospital officials couldn't give an update on the victims' conditions.

Investigators have not determined a motive in the shooting, Smith said.

He said that the fairgrounds building had been rented by an private individual from the Lions Club. Smith said many of the people there were associated with a motorcycle group.

This was the fourth shooting at this location in the past two years, Smith said.

Officers responding to the shooting blocked the parking lot, which was full of more than 100 vehicles, and didn't let anyone leave until they had accounted for everyone at the party, Smith said.

Gunter was arrested trying to leave the scene, police said. He faces two counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.

He was being held in the Lee County jail Sunday afternoon under a $1 million bond. His first court appearance was set for Monday.
