FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Tom McCarthy, who served as Fayetteville's chief of police from 2001 to 2007, died Monday.

McCarthy, 62, suffered heart attacks in 1991 and 2002, but his cause of death was not released.

After his retirement from the Fayetteville department, he accepted a similar role in Chapel Hill, but was unable to take office due to his health. In a letter to the Chapel Hill town manager, McCarthy wrote that he was disappointed to have failed the physical exam required by North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards.

"I believe it is most important that I follow my doctor's advice and address my health issues of hypertension," he wrote.
