SMITHFIELD, N.C. — A Johnston County grand jury indicted a Clayton woman on a charge of second-degree murder in a wreck that killed an 18-year-old woman last month.

Desiree Olsen, 29, of Clayton, crossed the center line of Buffalo Road in Archer Lodge, slamming her pickup into a pickup driven by Shannon Nicole Adkins Nov. 8, authorities said. Adkins, 18, of Clayton, died instantly at the scene – two blocks from her parents' home.

State troopers have also charged Olsen with driving while impaired and said that alcohol was a factor in the wreck. The grand jury also indicted her on a charge of driving left of center.

Olsen remains hospitalized at WakeMed, where she was listed in good condition Friday. She will face the charges once she is released.

Adkins graduated from Clayton High School this year and studying criminal justice at Wayne Community College in Goldsboro. Her mother, Ernie Adkins, said that her daughter was inspired by doing her senior project on why Johnston County leads the state in auto-related teen deaths.

Since 2006, nearly 30 teens have died in wrecks on Johnston roads.
