Gunfire at Kenly home kills man, injures deputy

A man was shot to death and a sheriff's deputy was injured Saturday night at a residence on Glendale Road, according to the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office.

KENLY, N.C. — A man was shot to death and a sheriff's deputy was injured Saturday night at a residence on Glendale Road, according to the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office.

Two deputies went to a the home at 2349 Glendale shortly after 9 p.m. to assist an ambulance that had been called to treat an injured person.

When the deputies arrived, a man shot at them, Tammy Amaon, a spokeswoman for the sheriff's office, said. A deputy returned fire, hitting the man and killing him.

A deputy was injured during the exchange of gunfire but was treated at the scene for non-life-threatening injuries.

The names of those involved in the shooting have not been released.

An elderly neighbor said that a man and woman lived at the house. She described them as a nice couple who looked after her and her husband.

The State Bureau of Investigation was reviewing the incident, following standard procedure for all officer-involved shootings.
