Cary, N.C. — At least three people were transported to a nearby hospital Wednesday evening following an wreck at Holly Springs Road and Tryon Road in Cary.
Police were trying to piece together what happened, but witnesses said a Mitsubishi Eclipse ran a red light, hitting a van as it was turning the corner. The Eclipse then flew into the air and landed, hitting another car, witnesses said.
One of the vehicles caught fire. Authorities estimated up to five vehicles were involved.
“We just came through that intersection. That is the intersection we used to get to Harris Teeter. That could have been us. We’re just a little shaken up,” witness Abram Detwiler said.
The conditions of those involved in the wreck were not immediately known.
About a block of Tryon Road near the site of the wreck closed as police cleared the scene. Firefighters brought lights to the area to help accident investigators as they reconstructed what happened.
Meanwhile, Raleigh police worked two wrecks on the Interstate 440 inner loop Wednesday evening. A crash near Hillsborough Street and another near Western Boulevard caused traffic backups.
One person sustained minor injuries, according to the police watch commander.
The cause of the wrecks remained under investigation Wednesday evening.
