RALEIGH, N.C. — State inspectors said all rides should be up and running by the opening day of the State Fair.

On Thursday morning, 101 of the 114 rides had been certified, according to Jonathan Brooks, of the state Department of Labor.

Nearly all rides were expected to be open on Thursday afternoon – the fair’s preview day. Gates opened at 3 p.m., and midway rides were expected to start at 4 p.m.

Among the 13 rides left for final inspection was the RC-48 – the world’s largest portable roller coaster. A contest was scheduled to name the coaster on Thursday. The winner will receive a prize and have his or her name posted next to the roller coaster.

Inspectors had an extra four days for inspections this year. Crews started setting up earlier because they had more time between their last fair and the N.C. State Fair.
