— A Rocky Mount woman said she got out of her shower Monday to find a stranger in her Benvenue Road home.

"It is just not something you think would happen to you,” Donna Sherrod said.

Sherrod said that while she often left her doors unlocked, she never expected someone to just come inside.

"I was just praying to God that I wasn't about to die,” she said.

Sherrod said she was in the shower Monday when she heard a noise at the door. By the time she saw the strange man, she said, he was already on his way inside.

"He snatches the door open and runs at me and grabs me around my throat,” she recalled.

Sherrod said she thought her best chance of survival was getting to the kitchen to grab a weapon. However, what really saved her, she said, was her 4-month-old dog. He barked and bit at the stranger.

The man was eventually chased back out the same unlocked door through which he entered.

Sherrod said she feels blessed to have survived the attack.

"I won't keep my door open. I learned my lesson,” she added.

Sherrod said she didn't know the man and is hoping police can arrest him.

Officers are asking anyone with information about the incident to call Crime Stoppers at 252-977-1111. All calls and information are confidential.
