RED OAK, N.C. — A Hollister man was shot in the shoulder Tuesday as he tried to give directions to a driver in a parking lot.

Waverly Burgess, 25, was at a Griffin store in Red Oak when a green Ford Expedition pulled up and the driver asked for directions, Nash County authorities said.

As Burgess gave directions, the driver then demanded his wallet. When Burgess refused, one of the passengers in the back of the vehicle pulled out a gun and shot Burgess in the right shoulder, authorities said.

He was listed in stable condition at Pitt Memorial Hospital Wednesday. Authorities said they do not believe Burgess knew the three men in the vehicle.

The sheriff’s office does not know the men’s identities, other than they are black, or the vehicle’s tag number.

The Ford Expedition was last seen traveling on State Route 1003, near Red Oak Road.
