ORANGE — The Orange County Sheriff's Office has a mystery on its hands: a unidentified woman's body found lying in the leaves along a rural dirt road on Friday.

A witness called 911 after she heard shots fired around 11 a.m. on Wrenn Road, a dead-end road that leads to a mobile-home park off University Station Road.

Deputies found a black woman in her 30s with a gunshot wound lying at the end of the road. Emergency medical personnel pronounced her dead when they arrived.

Orange County deputies said they are trying to determine if the victim died there or was brought from elsewhere. Investigators from the Durham County Sheriff's Office were called in late Friday to see if they knew who the woman was.

Resident Sal Notromaso said he heard several shots fired early this afternoon, but thought they were fired by hunters, who are common in the rural area. However, his neighbor's alertness soon brought the deputies.

"She saw a car back out of the road real fast and take off," Notormaso said. "Then my son went to take out the garbage and said, 'There's somebody laying in the corner there.'"

Notormaso said one of the woman's hands was clenched when he looked at her body.

The witness who called deputies reported seeing a red or burgundy sedan backing down Wrenn Road at a high speed.

Deputies said they did not have any suspects.
