HOLLISTER, N.C. — Halifax County deputies arrested four men who they say beat to death a man who was attempting to protect a pregnant teenager.

Garry Shearin, 39, intervened in a fight at a party off Mills Road in Hollister during the night of Saturday, Nov. 10. Deputies said several people were assaulting a pregnant 15-year-old and her boyfriend.

The crowd then turned on Shearin, injuring him severely, officials said. He was taken to WakeMed, where he later died.

The girl and her boyfriend also suffered injuries, but have been treated and released from the hospital.

The Halifax County Sheriff's Office has charged four men with first-degree murder: Roderick Mills; Steven Richardson; Jade Shearin, who is unrelated to Garry Shearin; and Robert Williams.

Antonio Coley was also charged with assault on a female and assault inflicting serious injury.

Deputies said they might make more arrests in the case.

Shearin was a registered sex offender in North Carolina, but deputies said that was not a factor in this fight.
