— A 2-year-old boy died after being hit by a U-Haul trailer in the Woodbridge subdivision of Sanford on Thursday afternoon, authorities confirmed.

Police responded to calls about a person hit by a vehicle at 5337 Timber Ridge Drive around 4 p.m. When crews arrived, they found that a U-Haul trailer had rolled over a toddler.

Family members took the boy to Central Carolina Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police said on Saturday morning that it was unclear who was operating the U-Haul, and the accident remains under investigation. No charges have been filed.

Authorities withheld the name of the toddler, pending notification of the family.
