RALEIGH, N.C. — A skateboarder died after being hit by a car at 2504 Hillsborough St., according to Raleigh police.

John Randolph Buchanan, 16, of Apex, was struck by a 1993 Honda sedan at the intersection of Hillsborough and Horne streets shortly before 10 p.m. Saturday, Lt. Patrick Niemann said.

Tyler David Mitchell, 19, of Raleigh, was traveling west through the intersection while Buchanan was riding across Hillsborough street.

Mitchell attempted to stop but did not have enough time before his car hit the skateboarder, police said. The Honda was going 35 mph at the time, according to the police report.

Buchanan was transported into WakeMed, where he died Monday.

Mitchell had a green light when the accident occurred, police said.

Hillsborough Street – a busy thoroughfare that runs past the campuses of North Carolina State University and Meredith College – was shut down in both directions from Horne to Gardner streets. Vehicles were detoured through N.C. State's campus. The closure lasted for a little over two hours.

Raleigh police spokesman Jim Sughrue said there are no plans to file charges in the accident.
