TARBORO, N.C. — A head-on collision near Tarboro left one person dead and five others injured in the early morning hours of Saturday, state troopers said.

Bryan Owens, 18, of Pinetops, was driving a red Ford Mustang with one passenger on McKendree Church Road just west of Tarboro around 2 a.m. He made a left turn, and the Mustang hit a silver Honda Accord carrying four people head-on, Trooper K.S. Howald said.

A passenger in the Honda, Jaime Contreas Vazquez, 32, of Pinetops, was killed. He was not wearing a seat belt, troopers said.

Raymond Pittman, 27, of Tarboro, was flown to Pitt Memorial to be treated for serious injuries. He was also a passenger in the Honda.

Owens failed to yield, causing the accident, Howald said. No alcohol was involved in the accident, she said.

Heritage Hospital received the other four injured people: the driver of the Honda, Elizabeth Pollard, 20, of Tarboro; her third passenger, Michael Walters, 31, of Tarboro; the passenger in the Mustang, James Stills, 21, of Tarboro; and Owens.

All four had non-life-threatening injuries and are expected to be okay, Howald said.
