RALEIGH, N.C. — A Wendell man was being held on a $3 million bond Friday on charges he tortured and raped a woman over two days last month, police said.

Danny Thomas Goldston, 49, of 264 Wood Green Drive, is charged with five counts of first-degree rape, two counts of first-degree sex offense, and one count each of first-degree kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon and assault inflicting serious bodily injury.

A woman told police that she and a male friend were sleeping outside Hillyer Memorial Christian Church, at the intersection of Hillsborough Street and Boylan Avenue in Raleigh, on Sept. 15 when her friend was stabbed and she was abducted. She said she was eventually taken to a wooded area and was repeatedly raped and assaulted.

The wooded area was near the Amtrak station west of downtown Raleigh, said Jim Sughrue, spokesman for the Raleigh Police Department.

The assailant beat the woman so severely that her teeth shattered, and she was then forced to perform sex acts, police said.

The woman was released on Sept. 17, and she was able to contact her family, who took her to WakeMed for treatment, police said.

Goldston, who police said had a previous relationship with the woman, also was charged in connection with stabbing the man before the alleged kidnapping.
