FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Authorities on Monday identified a man killed in a house fire last Thursday and said the case was being investigated as a homicide.

The body of Charles Edward Townsend Jr., 23, was found inside 404 Durant Drive on Thursday afternoon by Fayetteville firefighters as they put out a fire at the house.

Detectives have determined that the fire was intentional, and they ruled Townsend's death a homicide, police said Monday.

No information on the cause of death or a possible motive or suspects was released.

Townsend had been renting the house for about a year, according to the landlord.

Co-workers said he didn't show up for work Thursday, and they couldn't contact him by phone.
