Skating for a Good Cause

RALEIGH — Organizers of the skate-a-thon held atRaleigh's IcePlex Sunday afternoon hoped to raise $5,000 for pediatrics atWakeMed. Skaters of every stripe -- hockey, figure and the wobbly --turned out, along with the mascot for the Carolina Hurricanes.

Members of the Raleigh Figure Skating Club and the Carolina YouthHockey Asociation co-sponsored the event. They hope to stage it on anannual basis.

The funds raised will go to buy equipment needed fornewborns and young children, along with toys.

In the first hour, more than 50 people arrived to put on skates and goaround in circles for the kids.
