Man with Rifle Holding Police at Bay in Durham County

DURHAM — Authorities in Durham County are urging peopleto stay away from Staggsville Road, where a man with a high-powered riflefired at a friend.

No one has been injured, and authorities say residents in nearby houseswere being evacuated.

Authorities have identified the man in the standoff as Danny Green, 37.They are considering the situation extremely dangerous because theweapon Green is believed to have is a .30-caliber rifle with a scope,which can be used for deer hunting.

At noon, officers had fired tear gas into a tobacco barn. It was unclearwhether Green was in the barn at the time. Some 30 officer have set up aperimeter, but they are not sure of Green's exact location.

Authorities said the incident began Wednesday morning when Green fired ata friend, Eddie Murphy, after Murphy toldGreen to get his life in order. Authorities said Green had been chargedrecently with driving while impaired at the beach. He failed to appear incourt on that charge.
