RALEIGH — One of the traditions of the holiday season got under way Monday night with the lighting of WRAL-TV5's tower. The public was invited to come by the television station on Western Boulevard to watch the event.
Each December, the 300-foot tower becomes a sparkling sight for motorists and other passersby, as its several thousand multi-colored lights shine through the night sky.
The strings of lights remain on the tower year-round, but are only lighted during the holiday season. Each year, a special crew checks the lights for outages, replacing bulbs that need changing.
Lighting the tower has been a Capitol Broadcasting Company tradition since the early 1950s.
