Woman Dies in Head-On Crash

Posted November 23, 1997 12:00 a.m. EST

— A woman is dead and two others are in Wake Medical Center after a head-on crash on Raleigh's Beltline Saturday night. Their identities have not been released.

Witnesses said a Mazda MX-6 was going south on the outer loop when it crossed a grassy median and crashed head-on into a red Volkswagen heading north. The Volkswagen's driver was killed.

A woman in a car right behind the Volkswagen said it appeared that the Mazda had simply turned left across the grass; she said the Mazda did not seem to be out of control.

The Mazda's driver and passenger had to be cut from the car by rescue workers.

Traffic was backed up at least a mile in each direction. Motorists were rerouted while police cleared the accident.
