Cary Organization in Need of Donations After Fire Damage

Posted October 22, 1997 12:00 a.m. EDT

— Since 1978 Life Experiences has helped bring gainful employment to people with developmental disabilities. The Cary organization offers four products and services: a bakery, a janitorial service, a thrift store and it grows and packages alfalfa sprouts. But the shelves are almost totally bare at the thrift store because a fire last week caused heavy smoke and water damage.

Mary Madenspacher, executive director of Life Experiences, said production has completely stopped.

Since the private organization depends on the profits it makes, it now finds itself in a bind.

Madenspacher said donations could help the organization pay some of its bills.

Life Experiences also welcomes any thrift store items. One Cary resident has donated air purifiers to get the smoke odor out of the store.

One year ago, Life Experiences ran into some trouble from Hurricane Fran that put it out of business for two weeks. Owners expect this latest ordeal will keep the business closed for one week.

If you would like to make a donation, send it to: Life Experiences Inc. 1335 Buck Jones Road Raleigh, NC 27606-3328

The phone number there is919-467-1973.
