FAYETTEVILLE — A Cumberland County Sheriff's deputy who accidentally shot himself in the leg is doing better. It happened Friday night.
The Sheriff's office says Deputy Jerry Hall and another deputy were riding in an unmarked car when a group of men came up and tried to sell them drugs.
Apparently, the deputy drew his gun and started to run. He fell, and the gun went off. The suspect got away. Deputy Hall is recovering in Cape Fear Hospital.
"He got out of the car, drew his service revolver, and held it to his side," says Sheriff Moose Butler. "As he ran, he stumbled and fell, and the weapon discharged accidentially, striking him in the upper right leg."
Dozens of patrol cars swarmed in to help in the search.
