Man's Body Found Near Umstead Park

Posted September 22, 1997 12:00 a.m. EDT

— Wake County deputies are asking the public's help in identifying the body of a man found near Umstead State Park on Sunday. Cause of death has not been determined.

The body was that of a black man with a large tattoo on the outside of his right calf. The tattoo depicts the grim reaper and a heart. The body, reportedly found wrapped in foam and a mattress, had begun to decompose.

A cyclist discovered the body in a ditch along an isolated area of Reedy Creek Road about 3 p.m. Sunday.

The road was closed to the public as agents from the City-County Bureau of Identification and a sheriff's dog searched the area for clues.
