RALEIGH — An accused cop killer was back in court Thursday. Kawame Mays is accused of killing Raleigh police Detective Paul Hale and another man last month. At Thursday's hearing, the district attorney announced he will seek the death penalty. Because of that, Judge Don Stephens appointed Mays a second lawyer.
Through his attorney, Mays took the opportunity to complain about abusive treatment at Western Correctional Center where he's being held. The judge said he'd notify the Department of Corrections.
The case is set for trial March 2nd.
