RALEIGH — A Raleigh police officer and a suspected drunk driver have both been released from the hospital, following a bizarre weekend arrest.
Witnesses said Officer D.C. McNeil was trying to arrest a suspected drunk driver on Whitaker Mill Road around 7 p.m. Saturday. The suspect, Paul "Chip" William Johnson Jr, 36, reportedly resisted arrest.
When Johnson refused to provide his license or take a sobriety test, McNeil called for backup. A second officer arrived, put his car into park and went to help McNeil. But his car rolled forward, hitting McNeil, who was shielding Johnson with his body.
The assisting officer, K.S. Newton, returned to his car and backed it away from the men.
Johnson was injured not by the car, but from his struggle with the officer.
