Swimmer Drowns at Jordan Lake

With no lifeguard on duty, people swim at their own risk
PITTSBORO — Chatham County officials are investigating a drowning after a trip to JordanLake turned deadly for 25-year-old William Turner of Durham. It happenedat the Parkers Creek Recreation area around 5:30 Saturday evening.

That part of the lake has no lifeguard on duty, and a sign cautionspeople that they swim at their own risk. Witness DeborahJones says it all happened in a matter of minutes.

"This girl started hollering that she didn't see her boyfriend and shestarted swimming back in," Jones says. "She looked behind her and the guywas saying something, but then he just disappeared."

Park rangers say the lake level is about two feet above normal becauseof Thursday's heavy rains. This was the first swimming-related drowningatJordan Lake this year.
