PITTSBORO — Chatham County officials are investigating a drowning after a trip to Jordan Lake turned deadly for 25-year-old William Turner of Durham. It happened at the Parkers Creek Recreation area around 5:30 Saturday evening.
That part of the lake has no lifeguard on duty, and a sign cautions people that they swim at their own risk. Witness Deborah Jones says it all happened in a matter of minutes.
"This girl started hollering that she didn't see her boyfriend and she started swimming back in," Jones says. "She looked behind her and the guy was saying something, but then he just disappeared."
Park rangers say the lake level is about two feet above normal because of Thursday's heavy rains. This was the first swimming-related drowning at Jordan Lake this year.
