DURHAM — As a group of men sat on the front stoop of their apartment building Friday night, two armed men walked up, demanding their money and jewelry. The men complied, but two were shot.
Domingo Benitez, 42, was shot in the face and right arm. He is listed in critical condition at a local hospital. Diego Aguerra, 37, was shot in the groin and is listed as fair.
No arrests have been made.
During the past two weeks, dozens of Durham Latinos have been victims of armed robberies. Most of them were carrying large amounts of cash. Friday night's robbery netted at least $1,000 for the assailants.
Aguerra lives in Raleigh. He was in Durham to visit his sister. Police said the men were sitting outdoors because the house was too hot.
