DURHAM — An accomplice in the kidnapping and murder of aWilmington honor student will spend the next nine years behind bars.
Melanie Gray says she took part in the 1995 beating death of DannyPence. Her sentence is part of a plea agreement.
During the sentencing hearing, Gray's attorney talked to the judgeabout giving her a second chance. The victim's mother, Sharlene Pence, said her son would not get the same opportunity.
Gray was just 14 at the time of the murder. Todd Boggess, whom prosecutors say masterminded the crime, was sentenced to death earlierthis year.
