FAYETTEVILLE — There's disturbing new information Wednesday about a former Fort Bragg soldier convicted of killing two black Fayetteville residents.
The FBI says it checked out James Burmeister on criminal conspiracy allegations in the months before he gunned down a Michael James and Jackie Burden back in 1995. The investigation had nothing to do with racial prejudice.
Federal agents were looking into a tip that Burmeister threatened to kill the police chief of Philadelphia.
