Six Fires Burn Overnight in Chapel Hill

CHAPEL HILL — An overnight rash of fires has investigators working overtime in Orange County. Six fires broke out overnight, three in Carrboro and three in Chapel Hill. All the fires occurred within a one mile area and all broke out between 12:30 and 4:30 a.m. Tuesday.
In the worst of the six fires, flames broke out near the pool at Village West Condos on Cain Ridge Trail just after 4 a.m. Crews evacuated the apartments after a nearby storage building caught fire.
Investigators don't know what caused the fires or how much damage was done, but several of them started in trash dumpsters.
Barb McCullan lives near the Village West fire site. She says she now has quite a bit of clean up to do because of smoke damage.
Firefighters will not say if they think the six fires are related to each other or two a similar rash of fires between March and October, 1996. Police have been called in to help with the investigation into the causes of the fires.
