Spivey's Corner Noisy Again

SPIVEY'S CORNER — If you find loud noises offensive, Spivey's Corner wasn't the place for you this weekend. This tiny Sampson County town was the scene once again of the National Hollerin' Contest -- the 29th to be exact.
The contestants attempted to wail and yell, whine and shout -- oh yes, and holler -- their way into the winner's circle.
Eighty-two-year-old Robey Morgan of Glendale showed just how powerful an octagenarian's lungs can be. His virtuoso performance began with a wail like a siren that gradually shifted into a rendition of "Amazing Grace."
It was Morgan's second time as champion. He also won in 1979.
Kathy Walker of Goldsboro took first place in the women's division with her proficient -- and ear-splitting -- hollering.
The event is staged annually by the Spivey's Corner Volunteer Fire Department. Profits will go towards buying a new fire truck.
