RALEIGH — The body of a missing boater has been found by rescue workers at Lake Wheeler. Bernard Schirmer, who's described as an avid boater who was used to being on the water, disappeared Thursday night near the concession stand at the lake.
His family called police when he failed to return home. Authorities say they do not know the circumstances of Schirmer's death, but will continue investigating.
Early Friday morning, searchers found his fishing boat and fishing rod. But there was no sign of the man. Raleigh Fire Chief P.C. Woodlief say there was fishing line tangled in the boat's motor.
A 7-boat search party spent Thursday morning looking for Schirmer. The park was closed to the public during that time. Woodlief says it's hard to figure out what might have happened.
Woodlief wants to remind everyone that boating safety is of prime importance, even for those who spend a lot of time on the water and feel comfortable there.
