SPRING LAKE — 17 people have been taken to area hospitals after an accident involving a school bus and another vehicle this morning.
Officials say 15 middle school students, the school bus driver, and an infant riding in the car involved in the accident, have been transported to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center and Womack Army Hospital for observation.
The school bus was just one-quarter mile from it's destination, Spring Lake Middle School, when the accident happened on Spring Avenue.
Witness Joann Williams says it appears the car was speeding when it ran a stop sign.
The children involved in the accident are ages 11 to 14. Officials at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center say none of the injuries appear to be serious. Principal Robert Lucas says most of the students were transported as a precaution.
Police believe the driver of the car, Wanda Rochelle Hanton of Spring Lake, was traveling within the 35 mph speed limit, but have cited her with running a stop sign.
