Posted June 1, 1997 12:00 a.m. EDT

— Thousands of people picked up their telephones on Sunday and helped the Duke Children's Miracle Network Telethon, broadcast on WRAL-TV5, raise over $2 million for the Duke Children's Hospital.

The fund-raiser lasted from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m., with anchor Bill Leslie, joined by Yvonne Simons and Waltye Rasulala, who encouraged viewers to call in and make a contribution.

People called in from all over to pledge money and even challenged friends and co-workers to donate.

Businesses and sports figures were also part of the line-up, from the national Orlando base of the program.
