Special Olympics Gearing Up for Saturday Start

RALEIGH — Some very special atheletes are in the capitalcity gearing up for the North Carolina Special Olympics. Sixteen-hundredathletes from 90 counties are in town for the state games.

Opening ceremonies kicked off the state games at Walnut Creek AmphitheaterFriday night. WRAL's Jim Payne hosted the event.

Thursday, local law enforcement officials ran the torch into the triangleas a part of their fund raising effort for the Special Olympics.

If you think this event is big, just wait two more years. TheRaleigh-Durham area will play host to the World Special OlympicsSummer Games in 1999.
