CARY — Vance Heafner says the greens at Cary's Prestonwood won't look as pretty as normal when the Golf Channel televises the Nike Classic in about two weeks.
But the tire tracks on 25 of 54 greens will not delay or otherwise affect the golf tournament, which starts May 8, said Heafner, Prestonwood's golf director.
"This is something we can't tolerate," Heafner said. "We have to set an example and let people know we will prosecute you."
Police have charged three Camp Lejeune Marines -- Casey Hane, Michael Lucas and Jacob Stoulil -- with vandalism and larceny in connection with the early Sunday morning damage. Hane, who police say was driving the Jeep Wrangler that caused the damage, also has been charged with driving while intoxicated.
Police were tipped off by an anonymous caller early Sunday morning. The vehicle's occupants turned off their headlights to try and elude police, but turned onto a dead-end street.
Prestonwood officials estimate that the Jeep caused $50,000 in damage. Police said they recovered about $1,100 in golf course property when they arrested the three Marines.
