UNC-CH Stalker Strikes Again

Posted April 24, 1997 12:00 a.m. EDT

— UNC-CH students, already on alert after one rape and another apparent attempt last Thursday, are now doubling their efforts to stay safe. Police say there has been a third attempted assault.

The latest occurred Wednesday at about 5 p.m. when a woman was walking to her car in a parking lot off Highway 54 on campus. A man stepped in front of her to block her and tried to grab her arm. The woman was able to get away from him, get to her car and call police.

UNC-CH Police Chief Donald Gold told WRAL-TV5's Betsy Sykes that police are not sure if all three incidents involved the same suspect.

Police have issued a warning and offered some tips to students and staff who will be on campus this evening. They say be very careful, travel in groups in well-lit areas and take advantage of the school's mass transportation system and its safety escort service

Police have received some tips in regard to last week's assaults, but there have been no arrests in connection with any of the assaults.
