Dangerous Weekend on Carolina roads

SMITHFIELD — There were seven traffic deaths on NorthCarolina roads this past weekend.

One was in Cumberland County where police say a driver was speeding onHighway 301 when he apparently lost control of his car and smashed into atree. Elsie Stokes, a 50-year-old passenger in the car, died in thataccident. The driver, Robert Ramsey, remained hospitalized Monday.

So far this year, there have been 228 traffic-related deaths in the state.That's down from 256 this time last year.
