RALEIGH — North Carolina's rabies epidemic continues tospread, and seems to be gaining speed. The disease has now spread to 59 ofthe state's 100 counties, and state agencies say they are struggling tokeep pace.
The epidemic started about six years ago. Officials say they expect about1,500 new cases to be reported this year. Only nine cases were reported inNC the year before the epidemic broke out.
