WELDON — Amtrak's Carolinian train traveling southboundfrom New York collided with an automobile in Halifax County Tuesdayafternoon, killing the driver of the car.
The accident occurred where the tracks cross a road. TheCarolinian slammed into the car at the intersection, cutting the car inhalf. The driver of the car was declared dead at the scene, but Amtrakofficials said there were no injuries on the train.
Authorities say the victim was 21-year-old Tomeka Lynnette Clanton who wason her way towork. Witnesses said she drove past three cars stopped at the traincrossing before she drove around the down crossing gate.
The train was delayed about an hour and a half before making stops atRocky Mount and Wilson.
