Teacher's Students Struggle Back to Normal

WILSON — New Hope Elementary students returning fromthe Christmas holiday found their school flag at half-staff Thursday. Theholiday killing of fourth-grade teacher Kelly Hawks has her formerstudents and co-workers struggling to get things back to normal.

Her husband, Tim Hawks, is accused of shooting her to death the daybefore Christmas Eve.

New Hope's principal contacted every student's home to be sure each hadheard the news before returning to school. Anne Denlinger, Wilson's schoolsuperintendent, says the principal didn't want students coming in to thatsort of surprise.

Counselors and psychologists are in place for students and faculty atthe school.
