<b>LITTLETON, N.C.</b> — Deputies stayed on thescene Wednesday night until just before midnight, but had little to say about what happened inside the rural Halifax County house where Pat King was found dead.

Friends of the family say King was alone when, sometime afternoon, someone apparently entered the house, struggled with King, and shother in the back. Family members found her dead a little while later.

The killer was gone leaving no sign of a forced entry to the house. Police would not reveal details or speculate on a motive for the killing.

News of the murder drew family and friends to a nearby relative's hometo grieve.  Dozens were apparently friends of King's three teenage sons.

King had reportedly taken the day off from work to get ready forChristmas. She had planned to leave Thursday morning to visit a relative.
