ROCKY MOUNT — The search is on for the person who shot and killed 13-year-old boy inside his family's Rocky Mount convenience store.
The boy was just standing inside the store when he was struck by gunfire from across the street. Police say a customer who had been inside the M and A Food Mart earlier Sunday night is a prime suspect.
They say the incident began with a dispute over change from a purchase, after which the customer stormed out of the store. Police believe it was that customer who later returned and fired off a spray of bullets that also hit a parked car and the side of the store. Other than that, police say, they aren't sure what happened.
The victim's family is a close-knit group of Jordanian Palestinian immigrants. Dr. El Kassabany, a family friend, says the family is deeply grieving.
Officers canvassed a five-block area around the crime scene looking for leads and showing people a composite drawing of the customer (pictured, at left), hoping to track him down.
