HOPE MILLS — The First Citizens Bank on Main Street in Hope Mills was held up at about 2 Friday afternoon, but no suspect has yet been apprehended.
The man was alone when he committed the robbery, and fled on foot carrying a bank bag filled with money.
Witnesses reported seeing a man run from the bank toward a house about a block away. Officers surrounded the house, called out to anyone who might be inside.
Officers then forced their way into the house. They found no one inside, but the Hope Mills police chief did bring a leather jacket out with them when their search was over.
While they were inside, the people who live in the house came home and were frightened and surprised to see the house surrounded by armed police officers and FBI agents.
Resident Patricia Pearce said she didn't know what to think when she drove up.
At 6 p.m., the suspect remained at-large. He was described as a male with a dark complexion, wearing a t-shirt and blue jeans, and possibly wearing a jacket or cap. His height was estimated at about 5-foot-10-inches and his weight at about 150 pounds.
Police think he may have escaped into a wooded area headed southwest out of Hope Mills.
