CHAPEL HILL — A Chapel Hill school bus driver wasarrested Friday and charged with driving while impaired.

Some employees at Ephesus Elementary School, including the principal, said they smelled alcohol on 50-year-old Cecil Ingram before he left witha group of students Friday morning, but that the director oftransportation said to let him proceed. Principal Terrance Young let thedriver go, but called 9-1-1 because he was concerned.

Transportation Director Mary Truelove said Young followed properprocedure by allowing the driver to go to his next stop and let lawenforcement officers intervene there.

Some parents and others who live near the school strongly with thatprocedure.

Two hours afterhe stopped driving, his blood-alcohol levelallegedly measured .03, just one-tenth of a point below the legal limitfor commercial drivers.
