Trucker Runs Into Bridge

Posted October 20, 1996 12:00 a.m. EDT

— A 51-year-old truck driver can count himself lucky to be alive, after his rig plunged off an I-85 bridge and wound up in Falls Lake.

Officials said Donald Williams of Atlanta was driving for Scaleas Airport Services of Follcroft, PA. About 6 a.m. Sunday, he was driving north on I-85 when his rig clipped a guardrail, slid down an embankment and came to rest in the water.

Rescuers said Williams was lucky to have survived, and that his seatbelt undoubtedly contributed to his sole injury being a scratch on one arm.

The bridge, alas, suffered mightily. Officials put the damage at around $100,000, which they say will be billed to the trucking firm for which he was driving.

The accident created an immense traffic jam. Nine hours after the crash, traffic was still backed up 6 1/2 miles in both directions. As dusk settled in, motorists were still dealing with a detour.
